Why Iceland?

In 1986 I was fortunate enough to pay a very short visit to Keflavik airport whilst on-route to Canada with the army. From the aircraft and terminal windows I had only a limited view of the landscape. I could only see a small portion of the south-western tip of Iceland but what I could see fascinated me. Ever since that time I have felt the need to return to the island to explore and know more about it's people and culture. Then in 1995 I heard an account of a journey by disabled explorer John Birdsall the tale he told rekindled my yearning to see more of Iceland. However due to other commitments any plans I had of returning had to be postponed until 1998 when I was able to start once again thinking about a project involving Iceland.

Iceland has always been a place that has intrigued me, it has a reputation for being the land of "fire and ice" and it certainly is, but I suspected that it had a lot more to offer.

It did!
